It seems too good to be true. Situated on a hill surrounded by streets higher than the stadium. The Recep Tayyip Erdoğan Stadium from the Turkish football club Kasımpaşa SK is a must-see for stadium lovers. On top of that, the ground is located in the city centre of Istanbul.
Kasımpaşa SK
The Recep Tayyip Erdoğan Stadium is the home ground of the Turkish football club Kasımpaşa SK. De club itself has never won a trophy at the highest level of Turkish football, but that does not bother the avid fans. Danny Drinkwater, Ricardo Quaresma and Eren Derdiyok are some of the most famous players to have played for the club.
Recep Tayyip Erdoğan Stadium
The main reason why you should visit the stadium is its location. Hidden in the centre of Istanbul near the famous and bustling Istiklal shopping street. The stadium lies on a hill and from Refik Saydam Street you get a magnificent view of the home ground of Kasımpaşa. You will look over the green pitch with its eye-catching blue and white stands. In the background, you will see apartment blocks and the Golden Horn of Istanbul. A more beautiful picture than this of the stadium you will not find.
Recep Tayyip Erdoğan
The stadium is named after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. He grew up in a poor family in Kasımpaşa. Football was his big passion and he dreamt about nothing else, but his father did not allow him to play football because it would not make the family any money. Erdoğan used to sneak out of the house to continue playing and even became a semi-professional footballer at local clubs Camialtispor and IETT.
In an interview in 1994 with the newspaper Milliyet, Erdoğan claimed that he almost signed for Fenerbahçe, the club he used to support growing up. Funnily enough, Fenerbahçe fans are nowadays known for their opposition towards the regime of the president. Perhaps that is one of the reasons why he is now a fan of Istanbul Başakşehir, a football club owned by people who have links to the political party of Erdoğan.
