11 of the world’s most scenic football stadiums
Along the coast, in the mountains or hidden in a bustling city. SANTOS has created a list of eleven stadiums in the most beautiful locations worth visiting. Which football ground will you add to your bucket list?
Central Coast Stadium (Australia)
Sun, a blue sea and palm trees. What more do you want? The Central Coast Stadium of the Australian football club Central Coast Mariners has got it all. The stadium can hold 20,059 spectators, but the absolute highlight is the view of the Brisbane Waters and the palm trees behind the goal.
Estádio do Restelo (Portugal)
Lisbon is not only the hometown of SL Benfica and Sporting CP but also of CF Os Belenenses. They play their home matches in the Estádio do Restelo, which easily matches the beauty of the bigger stadiums in the Portuguese capital. Located in the beautiful suburb of Belém with a spectacular view of the river Tagus and the famous suspension bridge Ponte 25 de Abril.
Stadio Pierluigi Penzo (Italy)
In the narrow Venice where space is limited, you will find the Stadio Pierluigi Penzo. It has been the home ground of Venezia FC for 110 years. The club has become world-famous for its fashionable kits, but the stadium deserves some attention too. It’s on the outskirts of the city, surrounded by marinas where you can dock your boat. And that might be needed because you can only reach the stadium by boat or by foot.
Grigoris Lambrakis Stadium (Greece)
Hidden in the heart of Athens in an old quarry. It is a shame that this stadium, which is the home ground of second-tier side Athens Kallithea F.C., does not get more recognition. One of the stands is built onto a rock, whilst another is suddenly stopped due to that same cliff. From the stand behind the goal, you have a magnificent view of the city and the mountains in the distance. And then we haven’t even talked about the surrounding apartment blocks and massive floodlights yet.
Stadio Comunale G. Sinigaglia (Italy)
Our highlight of Lake Como has to be the Stadio Comunale G. Sinigaglia from the Italian football team Como 1907. Located on the renowned lake with a view of the surrounding mountains from the stands. In a few years, Como 1907 might even be an Italian powerhouse given their billionaire owners. And with shareholders such as Cesc Fàbregas and Thierry Henry, the future looks bright.
Rheinpark Stadium (Liechtenstein)
In the heart of the Alps, you will find the Rheinpark Stadium. It is the home ground of FC Vaduz and Liechtenstein’s national football team. It is the only football stadium in the tiny country that has a population of almost 40,000, but it is also one of the most beautifully located stadiums in Europe with massive mountains surrounding the ground.
Estadio BBVA Bancomer (Mexico)
It almost looks too good to be true. At every home match, the fans of the Mexican club CF Monterrey can enjoy a spectacular view of the mountaintops of the Cerro de La Silla. It is not often you will find a hypermodern stadium that also offers a splendid view. The Estadio BBVA Bancomer is also known as ‘The Steel Giant’ and the exterior is also worth a picture.
Mikuni World Stadium Kitakyushu (Japan)
A beautiful view of the water, the industrial zone and the high mountains in the distance. You can see all of this from the stands of the Mikuni World Stadium Kitakyushu in Japan. The stadium, which has a capacity of 15,300, is the home ground of Japanese third-tier side Giravanz Kitakyushu and is located in the harbour of the industrial city. Besides football matches, the arena also hosts rugby games.
Estádio Municipal de Braga (Portugal)
It might be one of Europe’s most famous stadiums, but that is with good reason. The Estádio Municipal de Braga from the Portuguese football club SC Braga is located next to an enormous cliff. The other side of the stadium is hidden behind the trees. The stadium was opened in 2003, so luckily for us, it will likely remain Braga’s home ground for years to come.
Vodafone Park (Turkey)
In the heart of the busy city that is Istanbul and right next to the Bosphorus Strait, you will find Vodafone Park. It’s the home ground of Beşiktaş, one of Turkey’s biggest clubs. The stadium is surrounded by tourist hotspots such as the Dolmabahçe Palace and Taksim Square. On top of that, the stadium itself is also breathtakingly beautiful. A must-see during your next city trip to Istanbul.
Subaru Park (USA)
In the United States, they also know where to build a stadium. Subaru Park is the home ground of the MLS side Philadelphia Union. The absolute highlight is the view of the large Commodore Barry Bridge that crosses the Delaware River. The stadium perfectly fits the industrial image of the city. It’s hard not to get enthusiastic about The Union after a visit to their arena.
